What to Expect From Your Wedding Photographer on Your Wedding Day: A Complete Guide

Planning your wedding is exciting, but if you’ve never done it before, it’s completely normal to have questions, especially when it comes to your photography.

One of the things I hear most from couples is, “We’ve never had professional photos taken before… what actually happens?” The truth is, your wedding photography isn’t about spending all day posing for the camera. It’s about capturing one of the biggest days of your life in a way that feels natural, relaxed and true to you. As a Glasgow wedding photographer, my approach is simple: I capture your day as it unfolds, documenting the genuine moments, emotions and little details that make your wedding uniquely yours. When it comes to your couple portraits, I’ll gently guide you so you never feel awkward or wonder what to do.

Here’s exactly what you can expect from your wedding photography experience.

Before Your Wedding Day

Long before I pick up my camera on your wedding morning, we’ve already done plenty of planning together. We’ll chat about your wedding plans, the timings of your day, the photographs that are most important to you and any special moments or little surprises you’d like me to capture. Every wedding is different. Some couples want a relaxed countryside vibes, while others are planning a lively city wedding. My aim is always the same: to understand what’s important to you so I can tell your story in the most authentic way possible. By the time your wedding arrives, you’ll know exactly what to expect, and you’ll be able to relax knowing everything has been planned.

Morning Preparations

Your wedding day usually begins quietly. There’s excitement, nerves, laughter and often a few happy tears before anyone has even arrived at the ceremony. These moments are some of my favourites because they’re completely genuine. While you’re getting ready, I’ll quietly photograph all the little details that you’ve spent months choosing. Your dress hanging up, your shoes, the rings, your flowers, handwritten vows, perfume and jewellery. Then I’ll begin documenting the moments that unfold naturally around you. Your bridesmaids helping you into your dress, a parent seeing you for the first time, the laughter while everyone is getting ready and those final deep breaths before leaving for the ceremony. I won’t ask everyone to stop and smile at the camera every five minutes. Instead, I work quietly in the background, capturing the atmosphere exactly as it happens.

The Ceremony

Your ceremony is one of the most emotional parts of the entire day, and it deserves to unfold naturally. I’ll capture your entrance, your partner’s reaction, the exchange of vows, the rings, your first kiss as a married couple and those little glances that often go unnoticed. Some of the most meaningful photographs aren’t the obvious ones. It’s your grandparents smiling proudly, a flower girl waving enthusiastically, a tear rolling down someone’s cheek. Those moments can never be recreated.

Confetti, Congratulations and Candid Moments

Once you’ve officially said “I do”, everything starts to relax. Guests hug you, people laugh, children run around, drinks are poured. These are some of the happiest moments of the day, and they’re filled with genuine emotion. Rather than directing everyone, I spend this part of the day documenting it naturally. You’ll often be so busy chatting with friends and family that you won’t even notice me taking photographs, and that’s exactly how I like it. Some of my favourite images come from these in-between moments.

Family Photographs

Although family photographs are naturally more organised than the rest of the day, I like to keep them as relaxed and efficient as possible. Before your wedding, I’ll ask you for a list of the family you would like for your formal photographs. I always recommend that we keep this to immediate family, otherwise you might get overwhelmed! (and we don’t want to spend all day photographing these!) It also means on the day itself we can work through them quickly, keeping everything running smoothly so you can get back to celebrating with your guests.

Your Couple Portraits

This is the only part of the day where I’ll give you a little more direction, and I promise it isn’t as scary as it sounds. One of the first things couples tell me is: “We’re awkward in front of the camera.” Honestly? Almost everyone says that. The good news is you don’t need to know how to pose. That’s my job. I won’t expect you to suddenly become models. Instead, I’ll gently guide you into flattering, natural-looking poses before encouraging movement and interaction between the two of you. We’ll walk. We’ll chat. You might share a joke. You might have a quiet moment together away from the excitement of the day. Rather than creating stiff, overly posed photographs, my aim is to help you feel comfortable enough that your personalities naturally shine through. Most couples tell me afterwards that this ended up being one of the most relaxed parts of their wedding day. It’s chance to take a breath together before heading back to celebrate with everyone else, and enjoy some quiet time as newlyweds!

What If It Rains?

Let’s be honest. This is Scotland. Rain is always a possibility! The weather might not always go to plan, but that doesn’t mean your photographs won’t. Some of the most romantic wedding photographs are taken beneath umbrellas, during soft drizzle or just after the rain has stopped. Cloudy skies also create beautifully soft light that’s incredibly flattering. If the weather changes, we’ll simply adapt. Years from now, you won’t remember whether it rained at 2:30 in the afternoon. You’ll remember marrying your favourite person.

The Speeches

The speeches are packed with emotion, laughter, happy tears, unexpected stories, embarrassing childhood memories. While everyone else is focused on the person speaking, I’m also watching the reactions around the room. The proud smiles, the uncontrollable laughter, the emotional glances across the tables. Those reactions often become some of the most treasured photographs from the entire day.

Golden Hour (If We’re Lucky!)

If your timeline and the weather allow, we might sneak outside for ten or fifteen minutes around sunset. Photographers often call this “golden hour” because the light becomes beautifully soft and warm. There’s no pressure if it doesn’t happen, but when it does, it can create some truly stunning portraits. It’s also another lovely opportunity for you to spend a few quiet minutes together before returning to your guests.

The Evening Celebration

As the evening begins, the atmosphere changes completely. Guests relax, the dance floor fills up, children run around, friends chat, this is where I go back to documenting everything naturally. Your first dance, parents watching proudly, guests singing along to your favourite songs, someone attempting a questionable dance move! These are often the moments that bring the biggest smiles when couples look back through their gallery.

My Photography Style

If I had to describe my photography in three words, they’d be: Natural. Relaxed. Timeless.

For most of your wedding day, you’ll barely notice I’m there. I love capturing genuine moments as they happen, without interrupting the flow of your day. When it comes to your couple portraits, I’ll gently guide you so you always know what to do, while still creating photographs that feel authentic and effortless. My goal isn’t to recreate trends that will look dated in a few years. It’s to create photographs that transport you straight back to how your wedding day felt.

A Few Tips to Help You Relax

If you’re feeling nervous about having your photograph taken, here are a few simple tips: Don’t worry about looking at the camera all the time. Focus on your partner instead of the lens. Trust the process, you don’t need to know or worry about posing. Build a little extra time into your wedding schedule so nothing feels rushed. Most importantly, enjoy your day. The more present you are, the more genuine your photographs will be.
