How Much Does a Wedding Photographer Cost in Scotland?

If you’re planning your wedding in Scotland, one of the questions you’ll probably find yourself asking is: “How much should I budget for a wedding photographer?” And honestly, it can be quite difficult to know. You’ll find photographers charging anything from a few hundred pounds to several thousand, and when you’re trying to work out your wedding budget, it can be hard to know what is actually reasonable. So, as a Scottish wedding photographer myself, I thought I’d give you a little insight into what you can expect to pay, and what you’re actually getting for your money.

So, how much does a wedding photographer cost in Scotland?

There isn’t one set price for wedding photography. A shorter package with a newer photographer might cost under £1,000, while a professional photographer providing substantial or full-day coverage will often be somewhere around £1,200–£2,500+. Some photographers will charge more, particularly those with many years of experience, a very high demand for their dates or additional services such as albums and second photographers. So if you’ve been looking around and wondering whether a quote of £1,200, £1,500 or £2,000 is reasonable — yes, it can be. What matters is understanding what you’re actually receiving for that price.

Why do wedding photography prices vary so much?

I think this is one of the most important things to understand when you’re comparing photographers. You’re not paying someone to turn up with a camera on your wedding day. There is a huge amount of work that happens before and after your wedding too! There’s the emails, planning, preparation, travel, photographing your day, backing up your images, carefully selecting your photographs, editing them individually and preparing your final gallery. And then there’s everything that comes with running a professional photography business, cameras and lenses, insurance, software, equipment maintenance and all the other costs that couples don’t necessarily see.

So when you see a wedding photographer’s price, you’re paying for the whole experience, not just the hours they spend at your venue.

How much coverage do you need?

This is one of the biggest things that will affect the price of your wedding photography. If you only want your ceremony and a few photographs afterwards, you may only need a few hours of coverage. But if you want your photographer there from morning preparations through to your first dance, you’re getting a much bigger story of your wedding day. You might have photographs of your bridal party getting ready, your parents seeing you in your dress for the first time, your ceremony, hugs with your family, drinks in the sunshine, your couple portraits, speeches, the cake cutting and all those little moments happening in between. Personally, those in-between moments are some of my favourites. They’re the photographs that bring you straight back to how the day actually felt.

Does a higher price mean better photographs?

Not necessarily. And I think this is really important when you’re choosing your photographer. There are incredibly talented photographers at different price points, and the most expensive photographer isn’t automatically the right photographer for you. Photography is personal. You might fall in love with the photographs from one photographer at £1,200 and not connect with the work of another photographer charging £3,000. That’s why I’d always recommend looking through their socials, website, galleries, rather than just a few photos on Instagram. Look at how they photograph people throughout an entire wedding. Look at the moments, the emotions, the lighting and the little details. And most importantly, ask yourself: “Can I imagine myself in these photographs?”

What should you look for in a wedding photographer?

Price is obviously important, weddings are expensive enough without pretending otherwise! But I’d also look at: Their photography style, how much coverage is included, whether you receive digital gallery or a personalised usb box, how they approach group photographs and couple portraits, whether they have photographed weddings similar to yours, what happens if the weather isn’t on your side, their experience, and whether you actually feel comfortable with them.

That last one is a biggie. Your photographer is going to be around you for a large part of your wedding day. You want somebody you can relax around. Someone who can make you laugh when you’re feeling nervous. Someone who can gently guide you when you don’t know what to do in front of the camera. And someone who knows when to step back and let a moment happen naturally.

Why I believe you don’t need to spend thousands to get beautiful wedding photographs

I think wedding photography should feel like an investment, but it shouldn’t feel completely out of reach. There are lots of brilliant photographers in Scotland offering beautiful, professional photography at different price points. For me, it’s about finding that balance between beautiful photographs, a great experience and a price that feels fair. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice quality simply because you don’t have a huge wedding budget. And equally, you shouldn’t choose someone purely because they’re the cheapest option. I’d rather couples find a photographer whose work they genuinely love and whose personality they connect with.

So, what should you budget?

As a general guide, I’d suggest allowing somewhere around £1,200–£2,500+ for professional wedding photography in Scotland, depending on the photographer, their experience, the amount of coverage and what’s included. There will always be photographers below and above this range. For couples looking for substantial coverage from preparations through to the evening celebrations, a package around the £1,200–£1,600 mark can offer really fantastic value, particularly when you’re working with a professional photographer whose style you love. And that’s something I really believe in. You don’t need to spend £3,000 to have beautiful photographs and someone who genuinely cares about your wedding day. Your photographs are worth investing in. Your wedding day goes incredibly quickly. The flowers eventually disappear, the cake gets eaten and the dress goes back into the box, but your photographs stay. They’re the photographs you’ll look through when you’re celebrating your anniversary, the ones you’ll show your children one day and the ones that bring back all those tiny moments you might otherwise have forgotten. For me, that’s what wedding photography is really about. Not just creating beautiful photographs, but capturing the feeling of your wedding day. The nervous excitement before the ceremony. The look on your partner’s face when they see you. Your gran laughing during the speeches. Your friends dancing badly on the dance floor. The quiet moments in between everything else. Those are the photographs I want you to have.

So if you’re planning a wedding in Scotland, don’t feel like you have to spend thousands and thousands of pounds to get beautiful wedding photography.
